Summary
Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
Essential Functions
Performs specimen collection, accessioning, and logging routines
Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures
Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides
Performs preventive maintenance and quality‑control procedures such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording temperatures on various instruments, changing the processor according to procedure, and changing staining solutions
Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers
Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area
Education High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred

Experience Clinical or Histology experience 1-2 years required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
