Position Summary
Also known as a Product Development Engineer, this position will be responsible for developing products for production based on customer specifications, functional requirements, engine packaging, and manufacturability. The role leads all development activities according to the APQP process and supports the manufacturing plant with issue resolution after SOP, providing ongoing technical support internally and to the customer.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
Responsible for all design and development related activities both internally and with the customer (product functionality, reliability, timing, quality, development costs)
Support local sales organization on acquisition of new projects in the region
Prepare and conduct technical presentations, internal and external
Lead all product development and validation activities including but not limited to DFMEA, customer packaging reviews, 3D model and drawing creation (including stack‑up analysis), prototype builds and DV/PV testing
Participate in weekly SE (Simultaneous Engineering) team meetings to fulfill project milestones on time
Cooperate and communicate within the project SE‑team, ensuring regular project gate deliverables are met
Lead all technical program meetings with the customer
Publish meeting minutes from technical customer meetings
Initiate and follow through with engineering changes via Engineering Change Management tools
Coordinate and chair necessary job/task clarification meetings with engineering team members
Approve technical results from central engineering functions such as 3D modeling, 2D component drawings, FEA and CFD simulations, prototype samples, and validation testing according to internal and customer requirements
Prepare conceptual designs for new projects based on customer specifications, function, testing, engine packaging, specification sheets, prototype target costs, etc.
Create the BOM (Bill of Material) for prototypes and production products
Initiate necessary component tolerances and stack‑ups to ensure form, fit and function
Develop and maintain DVP&R plans in accordance with customer program timing
Internally coordinate testing and release processes, analyze test results, and optimize component parts resulting from those tests
Obtain customer approval for technical documents, reports, and specifications submitted to the customer
Follow internal guidelines and procedures according to IATF, AIAG and customer‑specific requirements for APQP
Handle all technical aspects of the final product related to production processes of components and sub‑assemblies
Verify customer control strategies implemented for use with Pierburg products according to Pierburg application guidelines
Coordinate internal in‑depth analysis of customer‑returned engineering samples
Support plant Quality and manufacturing teams with problem resolution for technical issues in production
Support Supplier Quality in case of issues or deviation requests (SREA)
Develop and launch material cost‑reduction ideas in coordination with plant and purchasing departments
What Qualifications You Should Have
BSME or equivalent combination of education and experience
2+ years related experience in Powertrain Product Development or 4+ years related experience in product application
High‑level understanding of combustion engine processes and components
Deep knowledge in solid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials engineering
Intermediate computer knowledge / MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, …)
High level understanding of CAD and CAE tools and how to apply them
Knowledgeable and experienced in reading drawings, stack‑up analysis, and the use of GD&T
Familiar with product development processes
Innovative thinking and the ability to make contact and cooperate in a global team environment
Efficient in writing, communication, and presenting results
Willingness to travel as needed and to work abroad for training purposes
