Position Description The Operations Specialist is responsible for the operation and maintenance of gas pipelines and compression-related facilities, with significant complexity above typical maintenance operations as determined by the Department. The role involves managing pipelines, compressors, engines, turbines, fans, pumps, valves, seals and other plant equipment, serving as the operational backbone for our infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Operate and maintain pipelines, working with land owners and other public adjacent pipelines, and within compression facilities.

Install, repair, service and maintain valves, pipe and other pipeline appurtenances.

General upkeep and maintenance of facilities and equipment, including pipeline right‑of‑way, storage areas, offices and compression facilities.

Participate in capital and O&M projects (excavation oversight, air mover operation, pigging support, leak surveys, etc.).

Represent the Company in contacts with landowners, tenants, public officials, emergency officials and at local meetings (One Call, Pipeline Groups, Soil Conservation, USFS, etc.).

Oversee construction and/or maintenance activities performed by third parties.

Train and oversee company and third‑party personnel as required (e.g., personnel in progression, transport drivers, contractors, visitors).

Perform governmental compliance activities (PHMSA, State Agencies, EPA, USFS, etc.).

Identify, report and correct safety and environmental concerns.

Actively participate in safety programs and initiatives.

Participate in the development of O&M procedures, site‑specific procedures, project scopes and work plans.

Complete all applicable documentation and record keeping.

Perform all work in compliance with company standards, procedures, regulatory and tariff requirements.

Respond to and address call‑outs and emergencies after regular business hours, including after dark hours.

Demonstrate performance toward operational excellence.

Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalency.

Competencies, Skills, and Abilities

Basic computer skills (knowledge of MS Office, various operating systems, and other software).

Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals).

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Customer focus.

Strong mechanical skills.

Availability for shift work and standby when applicable.

Ability to work with others as a team and take direction from supervisors.

Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, document, and complete work with minimal supervision.

Ability to work with customers, suppliers, operations groups, engineering staff, and management.

Ability to safely operate a vehicle over rough terrain.

Experience (Advantageous)

Gas compressor stations and pipeline system operations.

Maintenance tracking database activities and requirements.

Line locating equipment and one‑call requirements.

Reading and interpreting blueprints, P&IDs and other diagrams.

Safe handling practices of flammable gases, liquids, and high/low pressure systems.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Valid driver’s license meeting company insurability requirements.

May be required to possess a commercial driver’s license and drive a company commercial vehicle.

May be required to achieve and maintain certifications as needed to perform job duties.

Achieve and maintain all Operator Qualifications and progression requirements applicable to the job classification.

Physical Demands

Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend/stoop, kneel and climb stairs/ladders.

Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, crouching, crawling, handling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, smelling, visual acuity, depth perception, color vision and field of vision.

Use of hand tools and equipment; repetitive hand use such as simple grasp and twisting motion.

Ability to climb to and work from elevated platforms, ladders and walkways.

May work in low‑lighted areas.

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Working Conditions

Required to carry a company‑provided cell phone/pager and be available during working and non‑working hours.

Must sustain regular and predictable attendance.

Depending on location and workload, travel will be required.

Must live or relocate within 40 miles of the reporting location by the position start date.

Job level will commensurate with experience and skill set of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed. This position is subject to random drug testing as required by the DOT.
