Overview ABA seeks an experienced legal leader to oversee the Office of General Counsel, advise business leaders, manage risk, and provide counsel on technology, payments, antitrust, and banking law.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as backup to the General Counsel and oversee senior people managers in the OGC.
Provide legal advice, research and analysis on association, banking, and business issues; identify potential legal risks and advise Executive Management.
Participate in contract review, subsidiary/affiliate governance, and coordinate outside counsel representation.
Lead training sessions, content development, and strategic technology/contract initiatives.
Negotiate and draft complex contracts with minimal supervision.
Act as Corporate Secretary for ABA Card Solutions, fTLD, and represent OGC on internal committees and task forces.
Develop and advance ABA policies and ensure timely updates to the General Counsel.
Collaborate across ABA staff and OGC attorneys to manage risk and drive business results.
Requirements
Juris Doctor (J.D.) and active U.S. bar membership in good standing.
Minimum 15 years progressive legal experience with strong business acumen.
Prior in‑house counsel for for‑profit or non‑profit with for‑profit subsidiaries, or relevant law firm experience preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in compliance, governance and regulation across non‑profit and for‑profit structures.
Banking or financial services experience preferred; familiarity with payments, risk management or corporate law highly valuable.
Proven leadership and management capability supervising attorneys and staff.
Advanced proficiency in corporate practice, contract negotiation, legal analysis and business transactions.
Strong strategic judgment, communication and relationship‑management skills.
Proficiency with legal technology platforms and contract management systems.
Ability to set priorities, manage multiple initiatives independently in dynamic environment.
Commitment to collaboration and operational excellence.
Ability to travel 20–50%.
Salary Target: $340,000.00–$350,000.00. Salary Band: $234,520.00–$328,900.00–$423,280.00.
