Job Overview Provides health care services by utilizing high frequency sound waves for medical purposes. The sonographer is competent in the production, utilization, recognition and analysis of Ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

Verify the order and the patient prior to examination, obtain the patient's clinical history, read chart/outpatient referral slip, interview, and communicate information to patient or appropriate family member.

Prepare patients for examinations and explain procedures. Perform Ultrasound procedures (Vascular, Abdominal, Retroperitoneal, OB/GYN, Doppler and Color Doppler). Observe and detect physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures, including respiration rate, behavior changes indicating distress, seizure, aspiration, choking, struggling or coughing.

Operate complex Ultrasound equipment relevant to the department’s needs (Real Time, B-mode, M-Mode, Doppler, Color Flow Imaging and all related recording systems), after demonstrating competency in theory and practical application of Ultrasound techniques.

Provide technical aid for surgical biopsy and aspiration procedures, maintain a sterile field while assisting physician by opening sterile needles, syringes, appropriate procedure trays and scanning in a sterile field with sterile gel.

Perform diagnostic testing on equipment and promptly report malfunctioning equipment to the Supervisor or Radiology Administrative Director. Contact field engineer for equipment service as needed.

Qualifications and Certifications

Graduate of Radiography or Ultrasound Program approved by the JRCERT or equivalent.

Maintain active certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARMDS) within six months from start. CCI certification is applicable to those who perform only cardiac and vascular studies.

Achieve and maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
