Bridge Inspection‑Team Leader (46731) – Collins Engineers, Inc.

Collins is an ENR Top 500 Design Firm seeking a highly motivated and experienced Bridge Inspection‑Team Leader to play a key role in expanding our Michigan team. This role blends office responsibilities with fieldwork, including state‑wide and local travel, and offers significant growth opportunities. The successful candidate will lead teams, manage projects, consult with clients and government agencies, and collaborate with seasoned professionals in bridge and structural inspections, evaluations, and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

Supervise above‑water and underwater bridge and ancillary structure evaluations and hands‑on inspections.

Be familiar with the MI Bridge program for MDOT.

Review, analyze, and provide recommendations on field and/or design issues or adaptations.

Prepare and monitor project budgets and assist in proposal preparation.

Accountable for project schedules and timely completion of projects.

Manage standard and intermediate engineering projects in field or office in accordance with plans and specifications.

Perform simple and complex engineering computations and estimates related to inspection projects and rehabilitation plans.

Prepare complete engineering plans or reports meeting MDOT design guidelines.

Direct and supervise entry‑level engineers, technicians, drafters, and administrative staff.

Coach field staff on inspection methods and techniques.

Make independent decisions within a general framework.

Use computer‑assisted engineering and design software for engineering and design documents.

Demonstrated bridge design experience is a plus.

Field work required, which may include nights and weekends.

Other duties may be assigned.

Relocation is available for the right candidate.

The base salary will be estimated between $87,280 – $115,580, plus bonuses and benefits, contingent on relevant experience.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited four‑year university (master’s preferred).

Minimum of 4–5 years of bridge inspection experience (preferred).

Must have passed the NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges courses #130055 and/or #130091.

Must be currently certified by MDOT as a Qualified Team Leader.

Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification required.

NICET certification preferred.

Valid Michigan driver’s license.

Physical Demands

Employee is regularly required to sit; stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.

Employee occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May lift and/or move up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

In the field, employee may walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather, and stand for up to eight hours or more at a time.
