At Houston Methodist, the Ultrasound/Vascular Technologist II position is an experienced technologist who performs a wide range of routine to highly complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures, including vascular exams. The role mentors Ultrasound Technologist I and students, works independently, and provides direct assistance to physicians during all diagnostic and special ultrasound procedures while ensuring exceptional patient care and adherence to professional standards.

Guide and mentor Ultrasound Technologist I and students to build confidence in skills, knowledge, and abilities. Use peer‑to‑peer accountability toward department goals for retention and employee engagement.
Facilitate open, professional communication (verbal, nonverbal, written) to achieve mutual understanding, role‑modeling by example, and clear, professional problem resolution that promotes work efforts and customer service during every encounter.
Service Essential Functions
Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures, including common, special, and vascular exams, using high‑frequency sound waves to capture imagesli>
Proactively assess, identify, and respond to patient needs for adjustment or intervention to optimize care, image quality, and experience—positioning, physiology, procedure preparation, and technical factors.
Provide direct assistance to physicians during diagnostic or special ultrasound procedures, including sterile technique.
Offer accurate explanations and instructions to patients and family members at an appropriate level using verbal and nonverbal skills, terminology, and language.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Follow safety standards and conduct all imaging procedures accordingly. Maintain proper sterile techniques, practice aseptic techniques, and ensure compliance with infection control procedures, hospital safety standards, policies, and practices.
Identify opportunities for corrective action and process improvement, provide recommendations, and contribute to meeting department and hospital quality and safety targets. Report near‑misses and errors promptly to improve processes and identify trends.
Ensure all imaging equipment has had required quality control (QC) performed and is safe to use. Report malfunctions to management and practice preventative maintenance; call for service if needed.
Assist with implementing and educating departmental safety initiatives and standards of practice.
Finance Essential Functions
Provide accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures and enter charges at the time of service delivery.
Use resources efficiently without waste and manage time effectively, prioritizing daily tasks independently.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Participate actively in special projects, department initiatives, or shared governance activities and seek opportunities to expand learning with a focus on continual development. Update the individual development plan (IDP) regularly.
Foster a positive and constructive teaching environment by engaging students and co‑workers (Ultrasound Technologist I) in learning opportunities aligned with business objectives.
Education
Graduate of an educational program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s).
Work Experience
Three years’ experience as an Ultrasound Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications – Required
BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
Must hold one of the following certifications: RDMS‑OB (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – OB/GYN; ARDMS); RDMS‑AB (Abdomen; ARDMS); RDMS‑BR (Breast; ARDMS); ARRT‑SON (Radiologic Technologist – Sonography; ARRT); or RCS (Registered Cardiac Sonographer; CCI).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrate skills and competencies necessary to perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing competency assessments and performance evaluations.
Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for patient‑care and safety, including letter‑by‑letter identification of critical information.
Effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers using positive language principles and a customer‑service focus.
Work independently and handle challenging diagnostic procedures and patient‑care situations, exercising sound judgment and advanced clinical skills.
Possess basic computer knowledge and operate multiple systems (Hospital/Radiology Information Systems, Office software) to maintain patient and exam documentation.
