Job Summary This position supports clinical pharmacy services in the Emergency Department (ED), providing real-time pharmacotherapy expertise in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED specialist collaborates with emergency medicine providers to ensure safe and effective medication use, supports rapid response, codes, and contributes to departmental initiatives focused on ED care. Responsibilities include bedside support, medication reconciliation, therapeutic interventions, and precepting pharmacy learners in the ED setting. Non-direct patient care activities may include cost savings initiatives, committee involvement, and participation in departmental projects and practice advancement efforts.

Required Experience and Education

PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program; PGY1 with 5 years of progressive clinical practice experience; Bachelor of Science degree or PharmD from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy

5 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty with PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program or 8 years progressive clinical practice experience within specialty

Computer Skills and Licences

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification (BLS) – Upon Hire

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Upon Hire

Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) – Obtain license within 30 days of hire

Job Duties

Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards.

Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty.

Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment and pharmacokinetic calculations.

Identifies opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care.

Participates in multidisciplinary in‑services/meetings, publishes articles, individualized drug information, rounds, consults, etc.

Manages P&T initiatives, monitors documented interventions, verifies data, develops measures and reports outcomes.

Supports cost savings initiatives and formulary management.

Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel; delegates tasks and evaluates performance.

Performs computer order entry accurately and timely; reviews medication orders for therapeutically appropriate therapy, duplicated, interactions, overall effectiveness and safety.

Maintains confidentiality and complies with privacy and security policies.

Supports teamwork and cooperation with co‑workers; volunteers assistance to help co‑workers complete tasks.

Performs other duties as assigned.
