A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of healthcare providers to deliver high-quality, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain care services. The CRNA cares for patients across all acuity levels and ages in various settings for procedures including surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management. A Brief Overview The CRNA practices autonomously and collaboratively to provide anesthesia and pain management services, caring for patients at all acuity levels and across the lifespan in various settings. They perform procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management.

What You Will Do

Perform and document preanesthesia assessments and evaluations; obtain informed consent.

Review, request, and order laboratory and diagnostic studies.

Select, obtain, and administer preanesthetic medications or treatments.

Develop and implement anesthesia care plans; provide postanesthesia follow-up and care.

Manage equipment, monitors, supplies, and medications for anesthesia and pain management; perform safety checks.

Administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, fluids, or blood products as needed.

Perform airway management, including fiberoptic intubation.

Facilitate emergence and recovery, evaluate patient response, and administer supportive medications and support.

Evaluate responses to anesthesia and surgery; take corrective actions as needed.

Discharge patients from the postanesthesia care unit.

Implement pain management modalities.

Manage emergency situations with airway management, emergency drugs, fluids, and BLS/ACLS techniques.

Participate in quality improvement activities to meet hospital and regulatory standards.

Demonstrate accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.

Education/Formal Training Requirements

Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - American Heart Association

Advanced Practice Nurse Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Nursing

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists

Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association

Registered Nurse licenses for Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee as applicable

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Clinically perform as a nurse anesthetist in the facility setting.

Operate and interpret data from anesthesia equipment.

Effective communication skills for collaboration.

Provide age-appropriate care based on growth and development principles.

Knowledge of infection control techniques.

Maintain confidentiality of records.

Adhere to facility policies and procedures.

Supervision Provided by this Position

No supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned.

Physical Demands

Activities include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motions.

Must have good balance and coordination.

Physical requirements include exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally and 200 lbs. frequently.

Requires close visual acuity, including color and depth perception.

Frequent patient contact and exposure to body fluids and hazardous materials.

Ability to react quickly in emergencies.
