Position Information The Police Lieutenant provides managerial oversight for one or more divisions and units, reporting to the Chief of Police. The role requires developing strategies and approaches that meet objectives while complying with Federal and State laws, municipal ordinances, and University policies and procedures. The officer provides instruction and guidance to direct reports to meet expectations and objectives. Responsibilities include managing delivery of public safety services, developing operational and budget processes, leading investigations, preparing reports, and serving as a platoon leader during emergencies.

Educational Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to complete required training or prerequisites as required by regulation, law or policy. Preferred: relevant experience, training and/or four year college degree. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Political Science, or other relevant discipline. Preferred: Completion of POST Supervisory Leadership Institute, POST Command College or the National FBI Academy.

Experience Requirements 8-13 years of related experience. Required: Minimum 3 years experience supervising sworn officers in a recognized law enforcement agency. Preferred: Previous supervisory/managerial experience.

License Requirements Required to hold a valid driver’s license, in accordance with local policies, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Certification Requirements Required: obtain the POST Management certificate by completing a POST-certified 104-hour Management course within one year of appointment. Required: possess a POST Supervisory certificate and complete the probationary period as a sergeant.

Special Conditions Background investigation and successful medical/psychological evaluation. Must be at least 21 and a US citizen or permanent resident with citizenship within three years. Must work rotating shifts in all weather/extended periods during disaster or civil disorder. No felony convictions or legal restrictions on firearm use. Must meet all requirements for peace officers and the rank of Lieutenant per California law. Must protect sensitive information and maintain data privacy. Travel as required for operations and training.

Minimum Requirements Broad experience performing all aspects of police officer and sergeant functions. Strong knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety. Strong knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends in the university context. Strong knowledge of budgeting and financial practices for law enforcement. Strong communication skills, decisive judgment, and ability to supervise and train staff. Strong computer and technology proficiency. Strong knowledge of firearms and other police equipment. Ability to represent the department credibly. Valid California Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications Broad experience in campus police functions and understanding of the UC Community Safety Plan.
