Traffic Engineer – Transportation Practice (Richmond, VA) RS&H is currently seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Transportation Practice in our Richmond, VA office. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent technical knowledge of traffic engineering fundamentals and be able to work independently on technical matters. This position offers a hybrid schedule of in‑office and remote work.

Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)

Essential Functions

Deliver traffic engineering services for VDOT and other local clients.

Perform quality control reviews and ensure achievement of key milestones.

Formulate and solve problems with timely and innovative solutions.

Maintain professional registration and licensure, ensuring conformance with professional, ethical, educational, and disciplinary practice requirements. Stay knowledgeable of all applicable federal, state, and local codes, criteria, regulations, and ordinances pertinent to the discipline.

Provide technical guidance and assign tasks to junior and support staff for project duration; may manage discipline and small multidisciplinary teams and ensure adherence to company and project contractual requirements.

Perform all other duties as assigned and within scope of practice.

Qualifications

Accredited Bachelor or Master’s of Engineering degree or other professionally recognized equivalent discipline.

5+ years’ experience within the field of traffic engineering.

Professional registration (PE) within the field of engineering.

Extensive experience in traffic forecasting, traffic operations analysis, and safety evaluation.

Proficiency in production and traffic software including HCS, Synchro, SIDRA, and VISSIM.

Experience with ITS Planning and Design, signal timing and design studies, signal operations, signing and pavement marking, maintenance of traffic (MOT), and lighting‑related projects.

Experience with software such as TruTraffic and MicroStation.

Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively and build strong relationships with team members, clients, and key stakeholders.

Familiarity with local, state, and national traffic engineering standards and practices.

Prior experience delivering traffic engineering and design projects for VDOT preferred.
