Department Overview The UF/IFAS Department of Animal Sciences advances teaching, research, and extension in livestock species including beef, dairy, poultry, swine, and equine. The department, staffed by ~37 faculty, serves approximately 80 graduate students and 560 undergraduate students across four specialization tracks: Animal Biology, Equine, Food Animal, and Integrative Animal Sciences.

Duties And Responsibilities Of Chair Position

Cultivate stakeholder engagement and alignment with the department’s mission and program priorities.

Engage and consult with an external advisory board and stakeholders in various livestock industries to guide program development.

Plan, develop, and implement departmental programs in teaching, research, and extension.

Encourage strategic, interdisciplinary programs that address national priorities in animal agriculture.

Provide financial leadership and stewardship of a large, complex enterprise.

Develop external funding opportunities and promote philanthropy.

Recruit, retain, and foster academic growth of faculty, staff, and students.

Advance undergraduate and graduate education, including recruitment, retention, experiential learning, workforce development, and online offerings.

Manage statewide teaching, research, and extension programs and coordinate with research centers.

Administer human, fiscal, and physical resources with transparency and accountability.

Promote shared governance, evaluate faculty and staff, and support mentorship.

Represent the department and faculty interests with university administrators and external partners.

Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Animal Sciences or a closely related discipline.

A record of outstanding scholarly achievement and professional activities that qualifies the individual for tenure at the rank of full professor by the date of appointment.

Evidence of effective administrative leadership and managerial skills, including strategic planning, resource management, team building, and mentoring.

Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary, grant‑funded programs and generate extramural funds.

Commitment to Shared Governance and overall excellence.

Strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student success.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, industry, producers, and external stakeholders.

Strong understanding of the mission of a Land‑Grant university and commitment to UF core values.

Preferred Experience

Experience working within large Land‑Grant systems, coordinating across campus units, county Extension, and Research and Education Centers.

Experience supporting development/fundraising and cultivating alumni and stakeholder relations.
