Job Summary Performs routine testing in a high‑complexity clinical diagnostic laboratory. Responsible for receipt of patient samples, preparation for microscopic examination and analysis by Pathology. Troubleshoots on‑hold cases and collaborates with the Laboratory Operations team to move samples efficiently through the workflow. Focuses on cutting, mounting, staining, and batching slides. Works independently on complex samples.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)

Trains new technologists on procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application, and assists in updating procedure manuals for inspections and accreditations.

Receives blocks, accounts for all blocks received, and addresses any problems associated with slides and blocks.

Ensures work is performed in the assigned area, including histology, special stains, neuropathology, frozen sections, and immunohistochemistry.

Determines when techniques and apparatus should be modified to meet required quality standards.

Mains quality control logs and monitors daily completion of logs.

Responsible for quality control of all reagents.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Complies with all policies and standards.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree required.

HT or HTL (ASCP) certification, or eligibility required.

Graduate of an NCCLS‑approved school of Histotechnology preferred.

Experience Minimum of 5–7 years of histology experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Can correctly embed all human tissue, including skin and animal tissues.

Follows national cutting standards of 50 blocks per hour embedding and 30 slides per hour cutting.

Can cut artifact‑free two‑micrometer sections.

Can competently perform all special and immunohistochemistry stains with minimum supervision using manual and automated methods.

Can impart knowledge to junior staff and residents.

Physical Requirements

Standing frequently (34–66%).

Walking frequently (34–66%).

Sitting occasionally (3–33%).

Lifting frequently up to 35 lbs (with assistance).

Carrying frequently 20–35 lbs.

Additional specific physical tasks as needed.

Schedule Full‑time, 40 hours/week. Shift: Day (United States of America).

Pay Range $33.46 – $48.66 per hour.
