Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Perfusion program required

Certification/License:

Must have the following at time of hire/transfer - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and

Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO)

Experience

– 1-2 Years of intermediate level Perfusion experience preferred. We’re seeking professionals with a desire to teach, train cardiology fellows, and share perfusion knowledge base with fellows, team members, and students during clinical rotations.

The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to help or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function.

JOB SUMMARY The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to help or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for help, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, examination, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other team members informed.

Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used and the correct setup and breakdown of disposable, non-disposable, sterile and non-sterile equipment.

Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-help devices.

Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a way that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.

Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a way that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.

Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; evaluates and maintains records after surgery.

Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.

Knowledge of several cardiac diseases, defects and congenital anomalies.

Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infant patients.

Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, pressures and gas exchange within the body in adult, pediatric and infant patients.

Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products by extracorporeal circuits and devices.

Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.

Verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to follow orders, take directions, and deploy written perfusion protocols.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal help devices and providing patient care.

Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.

Ability to work and join in a flexible way in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.

Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

EDUCATION - Bachelor's

EXPERIENCE - 1 Year of Experience

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
