This is a full professional journey level class. Under direction, the Industrial Hygienist provides consultation and direction to County departments on industrial hygiene and occupational health problems, integrates occupational health programs and concepts into standard safety programs, and performs difficult industrial hygiene and occupational health work in connection with health hazards in places of employment and in the community, and makes recommendations for the prevention, elimination and control of work-induced illness. May be assigned civil defense and emergency preparedness activities.
Knowledge of
Basic principles and practices of occupational health, industrial hygiene, and safety
Laws, standards and codes relating to the federal and state Occupational Health and Safety Act
Methods and practices used in the determination and elimination of industrial hazards
Industrial hygiene instruments and testing equipment
Principles of training and lead worker activities
The basic fundamentals of air pollution, toxicology, and hazardous materials as they relate to occupational health.
Ability to
Independently conduct difficult field studies and investigations
Evaluate findings and prepare written recommendations for elimination or control of hazardous conditions
Conduct research in specific industrial hygiene areas
Identify organizational needs in occupational health service programs
Develop, conduct and coordinate educational programs on occupational health and industrial environmental health and safety problems
Speak effectively to community and governmental groups and individuals
Establish and maintain cooperative public relationships
Write clear and concise reports and correspondence
Train other technical personnel and act as lead worker over subordinate staff members in connection with studies or special projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Certificate in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene issued by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, or a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers; AND Any combination of education, experience or training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. Typical ways to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Completion of major course work from a recognized college leading to a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, engineering, chemistry, biology, public health, or in a field directly related to occupational health and safety. AND EITHER: 1. A Master's Degree in industrial hygiene and two years experience in the full-time practice of industrial hygiene; OR 2. Four years full-time experience in the practice of industrial hygiene.
Special Requirements
License Required: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher will be required prior to appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate driver's license may constitute cause for disciplinary action.
Physical Requirements: Ability to stoop and kneel to conduct inspections; take environmental samples; inspect equipment, climb fences, stairs, and ladders, walk rough terrain and muddy fields; climb into and out of close spaces; wear protective clothing and breathing masks; visually distinguish between colors, calibrate and utilize technical and monitoring instruments, read gauges and meters, and see in dimly lit areas.
Work Schedule and Conditions: Incumbents are subject to work in adverse weather conditions, emergency situations, and perform duties during other than normal working hours as necessary.
Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.
