Mechanical Engineer III
to join our team. This senior-level engineering position is responsible for the design and development of complex automated systems, including large-scale, multi-module machines. The role also provides mentorship and leadership to junior engineers and serves as the Mechanical Engineering Lead on high-value projects.

As a Mechanical Engineer III, you will lead the conceptualization and detailed design of advanced automation equipment to meet both customer and internal specifications. You will have the autonomy to lead projects of any size—including systems valued over $1.5M—and play a critical role in delivering robust, efficient, and cost-effective automation solutions.

Lead the design of cam, servo, and air‑operated stations; modify and improve existing systems.
Execute complex cam (drive) designs and ensure they meet performance, cost, and durability requirements.
Research and specify appropriate materials, mechanical components, and vendors.
Create and manage detail drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs, and release packages.
Develop pneumatic and timing diagrams; select sensors and other components.
Act as the Mechanical Engineering Lead on all project sizes, including multi‑module, large‑scale systems.
Work closely with cross‑functional teams and customers during all phases of design reviews.
Ensure all designs comply with ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards, ISO 9001/13485, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Deliver projects on time and within budget.
Collaborate effectively with internal teams, customers, and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
Provide guidance and mentorship to Mechanical Engineer I and II team members.
Promote innovation and continuous improvement throughout the engineering team.
Documentation & Communication
Maintain clear, complete, and updated project documentation.
Communicate design intent and technical details clearly in both verbal and written formats.
Adhere to all company policies and procedures related to quality and compliance.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
6+ years of experience in mechanical design for automation equipment.
Advanced proficiency in 2D AutoCAD and 3D SolidWorks (or equivalent CAD platforms).
Skilled with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
Proficient with measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and other inspection equipment.
Strong project management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
Previous experience mentoring or leading engineering teams is highly desirable.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally; up to 10 lbs frequently.
May require standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
Normal visual and auditory acuity required.
Office‑based role with occasional visits to manufacturing areas (potential exposure to noise or physical hazards).
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
