Overview The Department of Economic Security (DES) is looking for an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Accounting Supervisor 2. The Accounting Supervisor 2, under the direction of the Accounting Manager, provides financial and accounting support to Departmental management and external partners, including the General Accounting Office (GAO) and the Auditor General's Office (AGO). This role involves overseeing federal and state reports, assisting in the compilation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), and ensuring compliance with relevant governmental accounting regulations. The position may be available for remote work within Arizona (one to two days a week in the office or based on business needs). Office location: 1789 West Jefferson Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007. Salary: $95,000.05 – $101,000.00 annually. Grade: 24. Current posting is open until sufficient resumes are received.

Responsibilities

Prepare, review, and analyze all financial statements and reports, ensuring they are in strict accordance with both Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards; lead the supporting document preparation for the ACFR.

Manage and maintain the general ledger for various governmental funds—General, Fiduciary, and Enterprise—ensuring compliance with GAAP.

Research, interpret, and implement new GASB pronouncements to keep the organization in full compliance.

Provide comprehensive financial and accounting expertise to DES management and external partners such as GAO and AGO.

Support Accounting Administration and DES program partners with critical deliverables for the ACFR, Schedule of Expenditure of Federal Awards (SEFA), and Single Audit Requirements.

Prepare complex financial statement reports and complete high‑level analyses within established guidelines.

Interpret the State of Arizona Accounting Manual (SAAM) policies and procedures, GASB pronouncements, and the Monthly Financial Review (MFR).

Direct and assign a variety of accounting tasks as necessary for the completion of work for the Accounting Administration.

Qualifications Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.

Minimum one year of accounting and supervisory experience.

Expert‑level knowledge and hands‑on application of GASB standards, fund accounting, and governmental financial reporting.

Demonstrated experience preparing an ACFR.

Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred.

Minimum five years of progressive accounting experience, with at least three years directly within a government agency, municipality, school district, or public accounting firm specializing in governmental audits.

Experience managing and leading teams (minimum one year of higher‑level management).

Certification options: Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) desirable.

Preferred Skills & Abilities

Strong understanding of GAAP and GASB pronouncements.

Advanced skills in automated accounting systems, spreadsheets, word processing, and presentation applications.

Project management and strategic planning skills with a collaborative work style.

Excellent oral and written communication and editing skills.

Ability to engage in decision‑making, internal consulting, and relationship building with stakeholders.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Successfully pass a background and reference check; employment is contingent upon completion of the above‑mentioned process.
