Medical Laboratory Scientist – Afternoons (36 hrs)

Job Summary Medical Laboratory Scientists at Henry Ford West Bloomfield function as generalists, rotating weekly through four core departments. The laboratory emphasizes quality, process improvement, and continuous learning, with plans for a new automation line and updated instrumentation in 2025. Employees enjoy a supportive team, flexible scheduling, modern facilities, and convenient parking.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Perform routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests on laboratory specimens using manual or automated techniques and information systems.
Apply knowledge, training, and clinical judgment to take action or develop solutions.
Collaborate with leadership to improve processes and resolve problems, including evaluating instrument performance and quality control results, correlating results with other lab data or disease states, and identifying causes of unexpected test results.
Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and information systems. After competency testing, perform processing, testing, and reporting independently.
Comply with departmental and institutional policies, including quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintain patient confidentiality.
Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities such as proficiency testing, data gathering for quality assurance, developing safe work practices, committee participation, and maintaining inspection readiness.
Education and Experience Required
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Coursework must align with the duties and meet the education eligibility routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website (ascp.org), or hold a categorical scientist level certification (BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB) or meet requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.
Six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions.
Certifications / Licensure Certification at the technologist or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, HEW) is preferred.
