Responsibilities Basic Function and Responsibility:
To supervise and coordinate the activities of the Specimen Processing staff on each shift to assure accurate and timely processing of laboratory specimens and customer service support.
Customer Service:
Provide total customer focus to meet the needs of every customer, internal and external, including medical staff, laboratory staff, patients, and families.
Specimen Processing – Bench Work:
Complete training on all work benches in Specimen Processing; direct and assist staff with specimen processing, problem solving, and fill in on the bench when necessary.
Personnel:
Prepare weekly schedules, record biweekly time, monitor unscheduled absences, apply progressive discipline policies, coach and mentor staff, and conduct performance evaluations.
Training:
Assist the Training Specialist in developing training material; arrange for staff to attend mandatory in‑services; monitor staff performance and add training as needed.
Quality Assurance:
Participate in QA activities, including requisition QA, callback log review, competency assessment, and updating procedure manuals.
Communication:
Communicate information to SP staff, laboratories, and supervisors; conduct daily huddles; participate in meetings; fulfill on‑call assignments on weekends and holidays.
Planning:
Participate in planning for and implementing new workflow processes and new computer system implementations.
Professional Development:
Attend HRD courses, in‑services, and meetings that contribute to professional growth.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to work with all laboratory environmental conditions, including infectious diseases and materials.
Desired Qualifications
Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred with scientific classes at a college level.
Previous experience as a laboratory or healthcare technician.
Work Schedule This full‑time, 40‑hour position is on the evening shift and will require rotating holidays, weekends, and on‑call.
Modes of Work Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
Background Screening Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre‑employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer.
