General Summary This position provides general research support in the Laboratory Animal Resources laboratories. The Senior Technician must demonstrate an understanding of scientific research, proficiency in laboratory techniques, teamwork, and the ability to train junior members. The role may also act as a team lead for specific studies, directing team members and monitoring work quality. The Technician reports directly to the Supervisor, Laboratory Animal Resources.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Observe and execute activities consistent with study protocols, SOPs, GLP regulations, and safety and health practices.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic study design and execution.
Execute key activities on a study following appropriate procedures.
Administer test and control materials by various routes (gavage, capsule, diet/drinking water, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous).
Administer anesthesia to all species in the facility and monitor recovery.
Gather and review in‑life and husbandry data for various study types (e.g., general toxicity, reproductive toxicity, in‑vivo cancer therapeutics, infectious diseases), including body weights, clinical observations, food consumption.
Perform reproductive‑specific procedures, including mating, vaginal lavage, estrous stage identification, handling pregnant and nursing animals; sexing and identifying pups; evaluating pubertal developmental indices.
Handle and restrain animals of various species (rodents, ferrets, dogs, non‑human primates, rabbits, etc.) at ABSL‑1, 2, or 3 as required.
Assist in training new team members on laboratory techniques.
Collect samples and specimens.
Observe, record, and report abnormal findings to the veterinarian.
Perform animal identification procedures.
Assist in surgeries; sterilize surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.
Perform animal necropsies and harvest tissues as directed by protocol.
Set up and review study files in the Provantis data collection system.
Execute electronic randomization procedures using Provantis.
Act as study lead as assigned (order and organize supplies, prepare paperwork, compare protocol to ACUP and BPR to ensure no discrepancies).
Monitor work quality of junior team members for coaching, mentoring, and training.
Create and revise forms and SOPs as necessary.
Provide solutions to a broad range of problems.
Develop new methods and techniques as needed.
Demonstrate broad knowledge and application of scientific principles, theories, and concepts.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a science‑related field with at least 4 years of related laboratory experience.
Ability to observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following SOPs, GLP requirements, and study protocols.
Effective communication skills with stakeholders at all levels.
Proficient use of MS Office Suite products.
Ability to wear PPE, including N95 respirator or PAPR for extended periods.
Team‑player skills.
Availability to work overtime, rotating weekends, and holidays as needed.
Knowledge and application of standard scientific principles, theories, and concepts.
Inclination to learn new tasks and train others.
Medical and vaccination requirements for working in ABSL‑2 and ABSL‑3 labs (e.g., Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Smallpox, Polio, Yellow Fever, Influenza).
Physical Demands
Standing, walking, or climbing for extended periods.
Sitting for extended periods in the work area.
Push/pull up to 100 lbs.
Lift up to 50 lbs.
Perform repetitive and strenuous activities involving standing, stooping, or crouching.
Withstand exposure to constant or intermittent high noise levels.
Clear vision at 20 feet or more (corrective lenses permitted).
Fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
Wear a respirator for extended periods.
Use a computer for extended periods.
Withstand exposure to high temperatures or humidity.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations ALAT, LAT, or LATG (desired).
