Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine The closing date is 29 November 2025

We are seeking to recruit one highly motivated and clinically focussed individual to work as a 10PA substantive Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant.

The Trust has both Adult and Paediatric Emergency Departments in the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Royal Children's Hospital. The appointee will be working within the Children's Emergency Department which is based in Bristol Royal Children's Hospital.

They will join a consultant team of 19 individuals comprising of a mixture of Paediatricians with subspecialisation in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Consultants with a sub-speciality interest in Emergency Paediatrics.

Applicants should be on the specialist register for Paediatric Medicine with a sub-speciality interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or on the specialist register for Emergency Medicine with a subspecialty interest in Paediatrics or be able to demonstrate equivalence and be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT in either.

Main duties of the job Instructor status in APLS/EPLS/ATLS or equivalent is preferable and in date APLS provider status is essential. Experience of Child Protection Issues and Paediatric transfer/ retrieval and Major trauma is desirable.

The Children's Hospital runs a single front door model supported by an adjacent 8 bedded short stay ward which is overseen by the Paediatric Emergency team. This hospital is a busy inner city teaching hospital, with the Children's Emergency Department seeing just under 49,000 patients in the last year.

The Children's Emergency Department acts as the receiving clinical area for all children either as a primary attendance or a regional secondary transfer referred to the Paediatric Major Trauma Centre from the trauma units. The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is 1 of 5 standalone designated PMTC and is located within the Severn and Peninsular Trauma Networks.

The Children's Emergency Department is the designated training site for Paediatric Emergency Medicine in the South West for both paediatric trainees sub-specialising in emergency and Emergency trainees sub-specialising in paediatrics.

Person Specification Qualifications & Training

Fully registered with GMC. Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) (or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview

Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications

Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or Royal College for Emergency Medicine.

Must be on the GMC's Specialist Register for General Paediatrics with a sub-specialist interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine* or Emergency medicine with an interest in Paediatrics*. *Or be able to demonstrate equivalence

Instructor in one or more life support courses (ATLS/EPLS/APLS/ or equivalent).

Formal Trauma team leader training

Experience

Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in relevant specialty

Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision

Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust's service strategy

Experience in Child Protection.

Experience in Paediatric transfer and retrieval.

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Up to date knowledge and experience of Paediatric Emergency management

Capable of being team leader of a paediatric major trauma team.

Knowledge of NHS priorities in Emergency Access Targets.

Broad range of IT skills

Experience in Paediatric sedation.

Clinical Governance and Audit

Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies

Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation

Positive approach to evidence based practice

Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation

Published audit.

Research

Demonstrable research experience.

Commitment to participate in research throughout the Paediatric Emergency Medicine Service.

Published research.

History of designing and leading regional or national studies.

Peer reviewed publications.

Teaching and Training

Experience of teaching medical students.

Experience of supervising trainees.

Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

Formal teaching qualification

Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it

Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service

Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant

Ability to practice independently as a consultant

Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership

Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks

Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures

Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.

Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.

Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
