Clinical Pharmacist - Oncology Sterile Compound PD
Brown University Health is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist to support oncology, hematology, and other patients at Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and affiliated clinics. The role reports to the Pharmacy Manager, Oncology and Sterile Compounding.
Responsibilities • Interpret, evaluate, prepare and dispense medications pursuant to legitimate orders in keeping with established policies, procedures, and standards of practice for inpatient and outpatient oncology, hematology, and other patients of Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and affiliate clinics (i.e., Brown University Health Cancer Institute, Tomorrow Fund Clinic, and Brown University Health Infusion Centers). • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to monitor, assess, and intervene as needed to ensure safe, appropriate, and cost‑effective medication use. • Review, monitor, and verify orders for oral and parenteral chemotherapy and other medications for appropriateness of drug, dosage, route of administration, completeness, and potential incompatibilities. • Verify chemotherapy and adjuvant medication orders against therapy plans, treatment plans, protocols, standards of care, and/or the “pediatric roadmap.” • Identify and clarify with prescriber required changes to medication orders, documenting changes. • Perform detailed in‑process medication checks for appropriate drug, diluent, drug volume, base solution, base solution volume, beyond‑use date, labeling, storage requirements, and compatibility. • Perform sterile compounding and maintain compliance with regulatory boards and regulations related to compounding of sterile pharmaceuticals (USP 797, USP 800, NIOSH, TJC, Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy, etc.). • Provide oversight to daily operations and processes related to oncology and compounded sterile product services, including maintaining the aseptic processing environment, garbing, aseptic work practices, and cleaning/disinfection procedures. • Mentor oncology and sterile compounding technicians, residents, students, and interns, and participate in orientation and training of pharmacy staff. • Utilize LifeChart reporting and inventory management systems and collaborate with pharmacy oncology and purchasing teams to procure oncology and infusion medications and related supplies. • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, continuous quality improvement initiatives, and safety event prevention related to oncology and sterile compounding services.
Qualifications • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy. • Current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist (or 90‑day temporary licensure) in the State of Rhode Island, with full licensure obtained prior to the 90‑day expiration date. • Successful completion of a Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY‑1) Residency from an accredited program and/or national Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy preferred; PGY‑2 residency in a related specialty strongly preferred. • Clinical experience, knowledge, and development may be considered in lieu of formal training. • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to interact appropriately with patients, families, and colleagues. • Organizational and presentation skills. • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technology, software, equipment, and automation; experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and web browsers. • Ability to multi‑task, reprioritize, and maintain accuracy and service standards. • Internal IV and oncology credentialing within two months of hire, maintained at least semi‑annually thereafter.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements Extended periods of standing and walking; visual and manual dexterity required to operate a computer; occasional travel between facilities as required.
Independent Action Functions independently within broad scope of departmental policies and practices; refers complex problems to supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
Compensation Pay Range
$51.99 – $85.78 per hour
