Translator/Interpreter

The UNM Early Childhood Services Center (ECSC) is seeking a full‑time Spanish/English translator/interpreter. Under general supervision, the individual will translate documents from English to Spanish and vice versa, and/or interpret spoken passages during meetings, trainings, and teleconferences. The position will collaborate closely with ECSC’s Professional Development Team and Instruction Design Team to identify training needs and adapt content for Spanish‑language learners. Duties and Responsibilities

Translate written documents from Spanish into English and from English into Spanish, including learner guides, handouts, audio/video transcriptions, consumer material, and professional development material. Read and rewrite learner guides, handouts, and videos, following established rules for word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. Sends approved translated documents to appropriate contacts within ECSC. Serves as interpreter at meetings and trainings, providing consecutive or simultaneous translation between both languages. Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to the second language, and translates responses from the second language into the first language, expressing either approximate or exact translation depending on the nature of the occasion. In simultaneous interpreting, renders oral translation of material at the time it is being spoken. Receives briefing or prepares through reading and study on subject to be discussed prior to interpreting session. May perform additional related duties consistent with the general level of the job and the responsibilities described. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; at least one year of direct experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Preferred Qualifications

Credential or certification in professional translation/interpretation. Previous professional work experience in translation/interpretation. Two or more years providing simultaneous interpretation. Knowledge of early childhood language and terminology. Spanish bilingual endorsement, licensure, or certification. Ability to travel statewide when needed. Holds a valid New Mexico driver’s license. Skills and Abilities

Spanish and English written translation skills. Technical writing skills. Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish. Proficient use of appropriate terminology in both languages. Ability to manage work schedules to meet deadlines. Ability to relay the style and tone of the original message while interpreting. Technology skills including Word processing and other appropriate software applications. Benefits Eligible
