About The Job Title: Pulmonary Advanced Practice Provider – MedStar Washington Hospital Center

Position Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will serve as a clinical leader in the care of ventilator‑dependent patients, with a primary focus on developing, implementing, and leading a protocolized ventilator‑weaning program. This APP‑led initiative emphasizes evidence‑based practice, patient safety, and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize outcomes for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation.

Working closely with pulmonary physicians, respiratory therapy, nursing, rehabilitation services, case management, and other members of the interdisciplinary team (IDT), the APP will champion standardized care pathways, monitor outcomes, and continuously refine processes to reduce variation, improve efficiency, and enhance the patient and family experience.

Essential Job Duties

Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations for ventilator‑dependent patients in an inpatient care setting.

Establish medical diagnoses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and initiate evidence‑based management plans.

Lead the protocolized ventilator‑weaning program, ensuring consistent application of weaning criteria, readiness assessments, and escalation pathways.

Collaborate with the IDT (physicians, APPs, respiratory therapy, nursing, rehabilitation, speech therapy, nutrition, case management, and palliative care) to align patient goals of care and ensure safe, coordinated transitions.

Track, evaluate, and report key clinical outcomes related to ventilator management (e.g., time to liberation, re‑intubation rates, discharge disposition).

Educate patients, families, and staff regarding ventilator care, weaning expectations, and program protocols.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and protocol development aimed at advancing care for complex pulmonary and critical‑care populations.

Contribute to program growth through leadership in best practices, data monitoring, and multidisciplinary education.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, daytime hours

No weekends, evenings, or major holidays

Flexibility required for patient care and program needs

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.

Current NCCPA (PA) or AGACNP (NP) certification.

BLS and ACLS certification.

Minimum 1–2 years of inpatient pulmonary or critical‑care experience strongly preferred; ventilator management experience ideal.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.

Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Salary Range USD $121,000.00 – $190,000.00 per year.
