The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), America’s first and oldest public arts conservatory, is part of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina System and is located in Winston-Salem—a growing, dynamic, multicultural community of about 250,000 people. The four-year undergraduate program at the UNCSA culminates in the BFA or BM degree in one of five arts schools: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.
The Division of Liberal Arts (DLA) provides required and elective liberal arts courses in partial fulfillment of these undergraduate degrees. DLA courses encompass a broad range of disciplines, including history, the humanities, foreign language and culture, literature, philosophy, social anthropology, psychology, and the natural sciences. Our faculty share a commitment to undergraduate pedagogy and to building effective, meaningful learning experiences that are of particular interest to students of the arts.

Position Summary
The Division of Liberal Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) invites applications for a full-time undergraduate faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in History/Philosophy, or a closely related field, beginning August 1, 2026. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education, whose research and teaching will enrich our four-course interdisciplinary core curriculum and other course offerings. Description of Responsibilities and Duties
In addition to offering courses in History or Philosophy or a closely related field, the successful candidate will demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching in an arts-oriented environment, developing courses, and teaching courses within our core curriculum. The teaching load is 4/4 per semester. Faculty responsibilities also include engagement in the life of the University such as participating in academic advising, faculty meetings, retreats, and committees; engaging in the development of new and existing programs; continued research/creative work within the professional area of study, and attending to all duties associated with a full-time faculty appointment as deemed necessary by the Dean and as described in the UNCSA Faculty Manual:

Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in History or Philosophy or a closely related field by the contract start date. Teaching experience and a record or demonstrated potential for creative, scholarly, or professional achievement. An ability to think across disciplines. Excellent interpersonal skills. A commitment to divisional and institutional service. An ability to design courses relevant to students of the fine and performing arts.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have an interest in a variety of pedagogical methods, technologies and modalities. A commitment to working with diverse student populations. An interest in establishing creative, interdisciplinary collaborations. An interest in ongoing creative and scholarly activity and in incorporating it in course design.
Tenure Information
UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
