Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred; two years of experience in construction, repair, or maintenance of public infrastructure or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
Must obtain and maintain Flagging Certification within the timeframes established by the department.
Must have mastery of bricklaying, masonry, pipe‑fitting, concrete finishing, or related skills.
Must demonstrate proficiency in the performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively.
Responsibilities
Perform skilled labor in support of construction, maintenance, and upkeep projects: support setting up, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete and cement; lay bricks; fit and lay pipe; perform other related skilled tasks.
Perform manual labor in support of construction, maintenance, and upkeep projects: lift, move, load, and unload materials, equipment, tools, furniture, and supplies; dig trenches, ditches, holes; shovels, rakes, spread, compact, and level soil, rock, asphalt, and cement; retrieve supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; run errands; collect and transport materials.
Follow established safety procedures: use safety equipment, wear protective gear; monitor work environment; monitor traffic conditions; flag and direct traffic; place markers, signs, cones; report incidents and accidents.
Perform various manual tasks in support of street, roadway, and drainage projects: build concrete forms for sidewalks and curbing; pour and finish concrete; construct drain boxes; build and repair street barricades; grade work sites; install and remove sidewalks, curbs, gutters, culverts; clean, maintain, and repair drains; install drain pipes; repair concrete pipes; clear drainage obstructions; lay and smooth asphalt; patch/repair potholes; compact road surfaces; install and repair pipe; install reflective markers.
Perform tasks with water, sewer, and stormwater drainage systems: fit, lay, and install pipe; repair sewer connections; dig around pipes; pump water; install and repair water and sewer lines; repair leaks; conduct smoke tests; maintain fire hydrants; build/repair manholes, catch basins, valve boxes; replace grit screens; clear ditches; break up pipes and concrete; assist equipment operators; replace water meters and related components; mix cement; perform related labor.
Perform grounds or roadside maintenance projects: mow grass; edge buildings and roads; plant and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers; water landscaped areas; prune; pick up limbs; mulch; spread pine straw, mulch, sand; lay sod or spread seed; apply fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide; apply salt/sand; rake; blow leaves; dispose debris; empty trash; dig holes; operate debris removal.
Perform building maintenance projects: clean buildings; mop, sweep, wax floors; troubleshoot plumbing and electrical problems; replace batteries, bulbs, ballasts; paint interior/exterior; repair roofing; install tile flooring; perform concrete and asphalt work; pressure wash surfaces.
Assist in setting up special events/activities; install holiday decorations; assist with traffic control; cleanup events.
Operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools: service truck, pump, probing rod, tamper, jack hammer, mower, edger, weed eater, chipper/mulcher, leaf blower, sod cutter, spreader, tiller, chainsaw, power saw, hand saw, concrete saw, air compressor, pick axe, sledgehammer, rake, post hole digger, shovel, hand tools, measuring instruments, two‑way radio.
Maintain equipment and tools: inspect, check fluids, refuel, minor repairs, greasing, sharpening, replacing parts, cleaning.
Gather equipment and supplies: ensure availability of parts and materials; request replacements as needed.
Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, click lists, work orders, service tickets, meter readings, smoke test reports, vehicle/equipment maintenance records.
Receive and process various forms, reports, work orders, vendor documents; review, complete, and forward.
Communicate with supervisors, departments, employees, customers, public, agencies.
Additional Functions
Provide coverage during special events or activities as needed; respond to emergency/disaster situations; assist other employees or departments; perform other related duties.
