Position Summary The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine invite applications from physicians with training and expertise in hematology or medical oncology and a focused interest in clinical care and clinical or translational research. The successful applicant will participate in multidisciplinary clinical care of patients and in the design and conduct of cancer clinical trials as a member of the UNMCCC Multidisciplinary Working Groups. This is an Open Rank, Open Track position. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The successful applicant will have fellowship training and a strong interest in the development of clinical trials in Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapy. Emphasis is placed on the ability to foster interactions between laboratory and clinical investigators, participate in multidisciplinary research teams, and participate in the teaching mission of the Division and the Cancer Center. Excellent salaries, endowed positions, and start‑up packages are available.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute‑designated Cancer Center in a 500‑mile radius. Its more than 120 board‑certified oncology specialty physicians provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated approximately 14,000 patients in about 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to inpatient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 400 patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments. The more than 100 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $35.7 million in federal and private grants for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1,000 manuscripts, filed 136 new patents, launched 10 new biotechnology start‑up companies, and provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
MD or MD/PhD degree or equivalent with board certification in Internal Medicine
Board certification/eligibility in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology
Experience in cancer clinical trials and/or translational laboratory research with a focused interest in hematologic malignancies
Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in cancer clinical trial design and conduct
Expertise in Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplantation and CAR T cell therapy
Experience in the development of novel therapeutic pathways, compounds or treatment modalities
Experience in resident/fellow education
Experience in clinical and translational research
A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
