Job Summary Under the general supervision of a Supervisor, Manager or Director, the Medical Laboratory Scientist performs clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established and approved protocols requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility. The role includes maintaining equipment and records, performing quality assurance activities related to test performance, and may involve supervising and teaching within the laboratory setting. Expectations include maintaining acceptable accuracy in in‑patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing, demonstrating critical thinking by analyzing, investigating, interpreting, and reporting lab data, applying current knowledge of policies and procedures, and communicating information to team members. Other duties are assigned as needed.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Maintain acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing.

Meet department standards for correct patient or specimen identification.

Maintain error rates within department tolerances for testing or reporting patient or QC results.

Consistently document investigations and correct interpretations of QA failures or trends.

Earn acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.

Maintain instrumentation for testing and support quality assurance activities.

Use clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data accurately and within established turnaround times.

Recognize the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectations.

Comply with Pending Log procedures for tracking laboratory test status and document all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure in the LIS.

Hand off information to others according to department procedures and chain of command, adhering to WellStar’s Standards of Behavior.

Take personal responsibility for corrective action on constructive criticism.

Contribute to Laboratory Performance Improvements and inspection readiness, assisting in analysis of new methods for testing, preparation for inspections, and participation in performance improvement initiatives.

Practice cost‑efficient work processes that maintain high‑quality laboratory data.

Maintain current personal training, education, and practice of policies and procedures, including WellStar policies, LIS, regulatory compliance, and safety standards.

Participate in meetings, committees, task forces, project teams, and complete educational requirements.

Comply with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and Code of Conduct.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education

Bachelor’s in Medical Technology, Medical Science, or another applicable field.

Master’s in a related field preferred.

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist

MT(AMT) – Medical Technologist

MT(AAB) – Medical Technologist

MT(HEW) – Medical Technologist

MLS(ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist

MLS(AMT) – Medical Laboratory Scientist

MB(ASCP) – Molecular Biologist (American Society for Clinical Pathology)

Additional License(s) and Certification(s) Persons who possess the technologist qualifications and have recently moved into the state (i.e., only have an NY, FL, or CA license) or have recently completed the academic and training/experience requirements at an MLS accredited school may be temporarily classified as Medical Lab Scientist for eighteen months to afford the opportunity to successfully complete an approved qualifying examination within 1‑1/2 years.

Required Minimum Experience Minimum 1 year laboratory experience. Preferred second or more years in a clinical laboratory setting.

Required Minimum Skills

Computer/data entry experience.

Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word and basic computer operational knowledge.

Epic and 3M experience preferred.
