Key Responsibilities

Compliance & Reporting

Manage advisors and internal staff by collecting/validating data, reviewing workpapers and drafting returns for accuracy and policy alignment, and maintaining complete documentation.

Lead tax accounting (ASC 740/IAS 12) through monthly reconciliations and entries, quarterly/annual provision, deferreds, UTPs, disclosures, and external-audit support.

Payments & Systems

Coordinate tax payments with Treasury/AP; maintain a tax calendar, compliance tracker, and complete audit trails.

Implement and optimize ERP + tax engine (e.g., Vertex) by automating data flows, exemption management, e-filing packages, and transaction-tax accuracy; resolve variances.

Advisory & Partnership

Monitor U.S./Canadian laws and guidance by researching impacts and recommending clear actions, owners, and timelines.

Advise Sales, Product, Legal, and FP&A on taxability, billing/invoice language, nexus, and contract terms.

Support pricing and deal reviews to protect margin/ARR.

Coordinate transfer pricing data and documentation; partner with global tax on cross-border matters, including BEPS/Pillar Two readiness.

Controls, Performance & Continuous Improvement

Maintain SOX-compliant policies and controls by owning the NA tax roadmap aligned to ERP/billing modernization and expansion.

Set SLAs/OKRs and publish a monthly scorecard for filings, reconciliations, cash-tax forecasting, and audit cycle time; drive corrective actions.

Manage audits and inquiries (income, indirect, regulatory) to achieve low “no-change” rates and fast cycle times.

Run improvement sprints (process/automation) to shorten close/provision timelines and reduce manual work.

Leadership

Lead, coach, and develop internal team members and outsourcers; plan workload, set clear goals, and use retros to improve throughput, quality, and engagement.

Create practical playbooks and guidance (taxability, exemptions, invoicing) and keep RACI clear across stakeholders.

How You Will Make an Impact

≥99% on-time filings/payments with zero material control deficiencies.

Reduce NA tax provision timeline and reconciling items quarter-over-quarter; accurate ETR and cash-tax forecasting.

Cut manual touchpoints in indirect-tax returns and account recs; measurable reduction in error rates and rework.

Lower audit exposure and sustain clear, defendable positions; strong documentation and policy hygiene.

Clear goals, coaching, and upskilling that raise throughput and quality.

Essential Skills and Experience to be Successful in this Role

Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance; CPA, JD/LL.M.-Tax, or MST strongly preferred.

5–8+ years progressive NA tax experience (public accounting and/or corporate), ideally in technology, SaaS, fintech, or subscription businesses.

Strong technical knowledge of U.S. federal/state and Canadian income taxes; practical experience with indirect taxes (sales/use, GST/HST/PST/QST).

Hands‑on ownership of ASC 740 (provision, uncertain tax positions, deferreds) and external audit support.

Proven experience managing outsourcers/advisors and reviewing complex returns.

Advanced Excel/data skills; comfort working across ERP/billing systems and large datasets.

Demonstrated competence in governance and SOX controls for tax.

Desired Skills and Experience

Fluency across the full tax cycle, from data sourcing and compliance through provision, planning, audits, and account activity.

Ability to interpret complex tax concepts and translate them into guidance that minimizes risk and optimizes ETR and cash.

Track record of continuous process improvement and automation; Lean or Agile experience or certifications preferred.
