The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects New Yorkers’ health by managing water supply, wastewater, and environmental quality across a 2,000‑square‑mile watershed. The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) oversees water distribution, sewer collection, and related infrastructure. This role supports the BWSO’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Division by leading audits, assessments, and compliance initiatives.

Responsibilities

Manage the Bureau’s EHS audit and assessment program.

Perform EHS audits/assessments and inspections covering worker safety and environmental programs in Bureau facilities and field sites.

Recognize hazards and assess risks to workers and the environment.

Document findings and observations during audits and assessments.

Analyze audit results, propose corrective actions, and track implementation.

Assist facilities with EHS compliance efforts and regulatory reporting.

Interpret OSHA, PESH, DEC, and other EHS regulations and agency policies.

Conduct field work across the City of New York and interact with external agencies.

Maintain EHS records, reports, and permits related to fire safety, chemical storage, and air pollution.

Support research and data analysis related to environmental health and safety.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in physical, biological or environmental science or public health, or doctorate with one year of supervisory/administrative research experience.

Three years of responsible full‑time research experience in an appropriate discipline for master’s holders.

Equivalent education and experience per the outlined levels, with a minimum of a master’s degree and two years of relevant experience.

Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Skills

Advanced knowledge of OSHA, DEC, PESH, and other federal, state and city EHS regulations.

Familiarity with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and other occupational health and safety management systems.

Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Access) and data management.

Excellent interpersonal, time‑management, and analytical abilities.

Residency Requirement: New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment, with certain exceptions for City employees of 2 continuous years.

Salary: $98,159.00 – $112,883.00
