Overview VHB’s Structural Engineering team plays a critical role in improving mobility and connectivity through impactful infrastructure projects. Our work spans complex bridge and interchange designs, rehabilitations and inspections, pedestrian walkways, and transit stations—advancing transportation systems and enhancing the quality of life for the communities we serve. The role is based in Washington, D.C. or Tysons Corner, VA, with a hybrid work model.

We are seeking a motivated engineering professional to contribute to a variety of bridge and transportation‑related structural projects. You will work in a collaborative environment, utilizing state‑of‑the‑art tools to develop digital models that support transformative infrastructure solutions across the region. Exposure to both public and private sector clients and opportunities for technical and professional growth are integral to this position.

Responsibilities

Perform structural modeling, analysis, and design for bridges and other transportation infrastructure projects.

Prepare detailed construction documents, including plans, specifications, estimates, and calculation packages.

Conduct quality reviews of engineering reports and construction documents.

Support structural inspections, evaluations, and load capacity ratings.

Review fabrication drawings and perform construction plan reviews.

Assist in the preparation of proposals, qualification packages, and project scoping.

Provide project coordination support across disciplines and help manage deadlines and deliverables.

Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and project managers throughout all phases of a project.

Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative and knowledge‑sharing team culture.

Skills & Abilities

Solid understanding of bridge design standards and structural engineering principles.

Proficient in at least some structural analysis/design tools such as Mathcad, STAAD Pro, AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, etc.

Experience with model‑based design and tools like:

Bentley OpenBridge and OpenRoads

AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, Infraworks, or Inventor

Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.

Detail‑oriented, organized, and effective in managing multiple tasks.

Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.

Comfortable working both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team.

Enthusiastic about mentoring others and contributing to team growth.

Experience in project/task management.

Minimum Qualifications

3–5+ years of experience in structural bridge and/or transportation design.

B.S. in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred).

EIT certification required; PE license preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Salary & Benefits The base salary range for this position is $86,000 – $128,000 for the Washington, DC location. This offer is determined based on a number of job‑related factors, including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
