Major Responsibilities

Provide general counseling services to students, including educational advising and assessment.

Inform students about college procedures, catalog use, regulations, fees, resources, special programs, and placement test scores.

Assist first‑semester students in completing individualized education plans and assist continuing students in setting academic and educational goals.

Conduct individual career counseling and provide career information to students as needed.

Assist students in locating college and community resources to resolve problems and crises affecting their success.

Provide counseling services for probationary and disqualified students; identify and address learning problems in cooperation with instructional programs.

Offer counseling and advisement to special program students, including those with financial aid, international students, veterans, students with disabilities, athletes, and students in retention programs.

Assist with ongoing planning and implementation of the college’s Matriculation Plan.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

For EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987:

Minimum of nine (9) semester units of coursework related to ethnic minorities, language, social, or economic disadvantages, or

Six (6) semester units of college‑level counseling practicum/field‑work in a community college EOPS program or similar program.

Two (2) years of occupational experience in work related to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.

Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Desired Qualifications

Equivalency in education or experience as assessed by the district.

Foreign degree evaluation from a NACES or ACEI‑approved organization, if applicable.

California Community College Counselor Credential (valid for life).

Licenses / Certificates

California Community College Counselor Credential (if possessed).

Additional Information

Letters of recommendation and official transcripts required for employment.

Certificate of Tuberculosis exam and Live Scan fingerprinting required prior to first day of employment.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States must be presented.

Employees may be transferred to any district site at the Chancellor’s discretion.
