Assistant Vice President for Facilities, Events and Public Safety University of Bridgeport

The University of Bridgeport seeks a dynamic, strategic, and experienced leader to serve as the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Events and Public Safety. This senior administrative officer is responsible for the integrated leadership, vision, and operational excellence of event management, hospitality services, and public safety at the University.

Position Description Summary / Purpose The AVP will ensure that all campus events, from smaller campus functions to large‑scale events such as commencement ceremonies, are executed flawlessly, safely, and in a manner that reflects the University's values. The role is responsible for overseeing ancillary, non‑academic buildings for smooth operation and positive revenue, fostering a welcoming and secure environment, and balancing open access with proactive risk management.

Essential Job Functions / Primary Responsibilities Strategic Leadership & Administration (50%)

Develop and implement an integrated strategic plan for campus events, hospitality, and public safety.

Apply industry best practices, evaluate processes, and recommend improvements.

Establish policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure safety and positive experience for all.

Manage complex departmental budgets and allocate resources strategically.

Supervise, mentor, and develop directors and managers within events, hospitality, and public safety.

Serve as primary crisis manager and lead emergency response planning.

Manage large construction and maintenance systems.

Apply knowledge of planning and zoning regulations and processes.

Stay current on federal, state, and local regulations, code requirements, and safety practices.

Preferred experience in higher education principles and practices.

Strategic and tactical planning and execution.

Event Management & Hospitality (25%)

Oversee planning, scheduling, and execution of major University events.

Champion exceptional hospitality across all touchpoints.

Manage key event venues and hospitality services, ensuring high standards.

Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Athletics, University Advancement, and President's Office.

Public Safety & Risk Management (25%)

Lead the Department of Public Safety, including direct and contracted personnel.

Build trust through a visible, professional public safety presence.

Oversee campus security, emergency preparedness, fire safety, access control, video surveillance, and parking/transportation.

Maintain relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.

Ensure compliance with Clery Act, OSHA, and Title IX requirements.

Experience in higher education or similar complex environments.

Experience with event management and public safety systems.

Qualifications Minimum Required Qualifications Education, Training, and Experience

Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Facilities or Project Management, Hospitality Management, or related field.

Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in event management, public safety, security, or emergency management, including 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing multiple functional areas.

Professional certifications such as CPP, CEM, or CMP are strongly preferred.

Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
