We work as individuals, as team members, and as part of a growing and innovative law firm. We are seeking a Director of Finance to join the firm and become an integral part of our Accounting team.
The Director of Finance is responsible for managing all aspects of the firm's financial operations including analysis, compliance, and forecasting. This role includes tracking cash flow, financial planning, analyzing the firm’s financial strengths and weaknesses, and proposing corrective actions. The Director of Finance ensures the firm’s financial reports are accurate and completed in a timely manner and oversees all finance, accounting, budgeting, and tax-related functions. They will play a key role in developing and implementing the firm's financial strategy and collaborate with the Board of Directors on business planning.
Requirements And Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA required. MBA or other advanced degree preferred. 10+ years of progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. Strong knowledge of law firm finance and compliance. Proven experience in financial management, strategy, and operations. In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and industry best practices. Ability to develop and implement long-term financial plans that align with the firm's overall business goals. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to analyze financial data and identify trends. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively manage a team and collaborate with attorneys and other departments. Understanding of the legal industry and its specific financial challenges and opportunities, preferably within the Intellectual Property (IP) area. Experience with financial software and systems, preferably Aderant Expert, Excel, and others.
Duties And Responsibilities
Develop and implement long-term financial plans, budgets, and financial forecasts to support the firm's strategic goals. Partner with senior leadership to provide financial guidance and support for major firm business decisions, including as to pricing, profitability, and outlays for, e.g., insurance, IT, real estate. Prepare and manage financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting. Manage the firm's cash flow, ensuring timely payments, and optimize cash flow for business operations. Monitor financial performance and develop strategies for growth and cost reduction. Oversee preparation of all financial statements, reports, and forecasts. Analyze financial reports and key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the firm's financial health. Report financial results and key metrics to the Board of Directors and other senior leadership. Ensure compliance with relevant financial laws, regulations, and accounting standards, including internal controls and audits. Oversee the finance and accounting department, ensuring accurate and up-to-date financial records, compliance with financial reporting standards, supervising payroll, coordinating with HR regarding certain benefits, and hiring and performance management. Oversee all general accounting functions including chart of accounts, general ledger, procedural aspects of the billing process, cash receipts and accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, bank reconciliations and client trust funds. Liaise with auditors, banks, and financial institutions. Develop and implement investment strategies to maximize returns while managing risks. Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets. Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations. Providing strategic guidance regarding developing and implementing alternative fee arrangements or other non-standard billing arrangements.

The salary range for this role is between $225,000 - $275,000. This is an exempt position. This range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Chicago, IL. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographical location, and business or organizational needs. This job is also eligible for an annual merit increase and bonus pay.
