We invite you to build your transportation career at HDR. Our global team is looking for an experienced, success‑oriented Senior Rail Facilities Engineer / Architect who will contribute to the success of HDR's freight rail facilities program.

This role involves a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects such as yard offices, mechanical shops, maintenance buildings, structural platforms, fueling facilities, storage facilities, process piping systems, electrical distribution, site lighting, site/civil infrastructure, pavement, mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead freight rail facility and infrastructure design projects.

Oversee the design development and documentation of sketches, exhibits, technical drawings, calculations, and specifications to confirm technical accuracy and version control.

Apply relevant codes, regulations, and standards to confirm compliance and intent within project designs.

Lead quality control and assurance processes by following established guidelines.

Review project deliverables and provide feedback to team members.

Review cost estimates and material takeoffs for accurate project planning and budgeting.

Oversee contractor submittals, including shop drawings and RFIs, to verify design compliance.

Oversee field assessments to evaluate existing infrastructure and document conditions.

Travel as needed for site visits, team coordination, and inspection activities.

Perform on-site construction inspections to confirm work is executed in accordance with design documents.

Obtain and maintain required certifications, including eRailSafe and railroad safety training credentials.

Assist in proposal writing, providing technical expertise, scope development, and hours/fee estimates.

Participate in business development meetings and interviews with clients.

Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with team members, stakeholders, and clients.

Commit to continuous learning and professional development to grow within the role.

Mentorship, feedback, and guidance to entry‑level and mid‑level design staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial architecture, or related field, with Professional Engineer or Registered Architect license; if not licensed, titled "Senior Rail Facilities Designer".

Master’s degree in engineering, Industrial Architecture, Business Administration, or related field.

10‑20 years of experience in design and/or construction inspection, preferably with freight rail, industrial, and/or transit facility projects.

Active membership and participation in an industry association (e.g. AREMA).

Ability to manage design tasks.

Proficiency with computer‑aided design software (Revit, AutoCAD).

Experience with project management principles and basic accounting principles.

Proven ability to solve problems in an interactive environment with business and technical staff to maintain a high degree of collaboration across multiple regions and diverse clients.

Demonstrated leadership skills, strong communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment with various teams.

Literacy with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Teams, OneNote), and PDF editing software (Revu/Bluebeam).

Local candidates are preferred.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in architecture, industrial design or related.

A minimum of 4 years of experience in industrial design, facility planning, equipment layout, building mechanical or plumbing design, or workflow analysis.

Power user of Revit and AutoCAD.

Command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project).
