Definition Under direction of a principal or assistant principal, AN Paraprofessionals assist the classroom teacher, special education teacher or provider with the supervision and instruction of students according to the student’s IEP.
Supervision Receives direct supervision from the principal or assistant principal and day‑to‑day direction from the classroom teacher, special education teacher or special service provider.
Responsibilities
Be prepared to assist in the event of a crisis at any time.
Follow CPI protocols for verbal de‑escalation and restraints.
Communicate all student behaviors, arrivals, departures and other relevant information directly to the AN teacher.
Use technology, computers and phones only after the end of the day and enter anecdotal notes post‑bus escort.
Escort students to restrooms, specials, lunch and recess as needed.
Provide support for AN students outside at recess and other off‑site locations.
Refer any concerns regarding AN students to the classroom teacher.
Familiarize yourself with and follow the behavior continuum for each student.
Collect data as requested by the AN teacher.
Do not enter or exit AN classrooms without clearance from the AN teacher for that classroom and limit unnecessary interruptions.
Limit conversations with staff or students to the minimum necessary while in the AN classroom.
Maintain student privacy; do not discuss classroom or school events outside the program. Refer any concerns to the AN teacher.
Support classroom instruction and management: assist with enacting rules, maintaining behavior expectations, supervising during class transitions, helping with small‑group or individual instruction, preparing and organizing instructional materials, and proctoring tests.
Assist in covering the class when the teacher is assisting another student or absent.
Report to work on time, accurately record time worked, and monitor student progress for communication with all stakeholders.
Assist in safe and efficient movement of students and materials, including occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Paraprofessionals may be required to lift students and/or objects, position students, and respond efficiently to unpredictable physical needs.
Ability to complete Crisis Prevention Institute training and additional training as requested.
Knowledge of classroom management, standards‑based education, special health care needs, age‑appropriate activities, child development stages, and English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Basic knowledge of modern office procedures, computer usage, and software packages.
Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and manage multiple responsibilities under stressful conditions.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Working Conditions Regularly works inside a school environment with a moderate noise level. Frequently required to sit, walk and stand, with occasional lifting of 25 pounds or less. Special Education Paraprofessionals may need to lift or move students as part of health services.
Compensation Hourly Rate: $21.88 – $27.59 Days worked: 185 days/year (with paid personal time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays and district non‑work days such as winter and spring breaks)
