The Juneau Empire, the capital city’s long-standing newspaper of record, is seeking a full-time Government Reporter to join its dynamic team covering local and state institutions in one of the most unique political landscapes in the country. In this position, the successful candidate will lead coverage of city and borough government, state agencies, and the Alaska Legislature, with a focus on helping readers understand how public policy and political decisions impact their day-to-day lives. This role is ideal for a journalist who thrives on accountability journalism, thrives in fast-paced environments, and has a passion for informing civic dialogue. This position includes: Daily beat reporting on municipal and state government, as well as news reporting Breaking news and general assignment reporting as needed Publishing stories to the web and twice-weekly print edition Building relationships with key sources and maintaining government transparency through watchdog reporting Taking photographs and contributing to the Empire’s growing digital and social platforms Skills and attributes: At least two years of professional journalism experience, preferably with a focus on government or public affairs A deep understanding of journalistic ethics and commitment to factual accuracy Proficiency in AP Style, basic photography, and CMS/web publishing tools Ability to file timely, clean copy and work both independently and collaboratively Interest in engaging readers across digital platforms, including newsletters and social media About Juneau, Alaska: Juneau is a coastal capital city of about 30,000 residents in the heart of the Tongass National Forest.
