Highway & Roads Market Sector Director Primary Responsibilities Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in global annual revenue. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.
The role requires understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures. Responsibilities are divided into:
Market leadership and business development (about 70%)
Staff development (20%)
Support to Operations (10%)
The Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and serve clients in this sector, supporting growth initiatives, staff development, and implementation of strategic plans in collaboration with leadership at various levels.
In the US, HDR maintains contracts with nearly every state department of transportation and regional entities, with expansion plans into Canada, the UK, Middle East, and Australia. The Director will support business development, client management, and strategic growth outside the US, engaging with local clients and providing expertise across various transportation services.
Responsibilities include:
Leading market share growth and client relationships
Supporting business development efforts with cross-sector collaboration
Overseeing strategic vision and client management
Participating in industry associations and forming strategic partnerships
Supporting staff development and technical excellence
Monitoring market performance and supporting project delivery
Qualifications Preferred:
20+ years in highway or bridge planning/engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.
Required:
Bachelor’s in Engineering, 12+ years industry experience, strong communication, client management, and business skills, commitment to HDR’s employee-owned culture.
