Highway & Roads Market Sector Director Primary Responsibilities Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR’s matrix management structure. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, local roads, and bridge structures, offering services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.
This role requires understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures at various levels. Responsibilities are divided into:
Market leadership and business development (about 70%)
Staff development (20%)
Support to Operations (10%)
The Director sets the strategic vision for HDR’s growth and service expansion, supporting regional and business group leadership to meet financial goals, develop staff, and implement growth initiatives. They coordinate with various leaders to develop and execute business strategies and maintain regular communication with leadership to implement strategic and operational plans.
HDR’s US contracts include nearly every state department of transportation, with expanding relationships in Canada, UK, Middle East, and Australia. The Director supports business development and client management, fosters best practices, and enhances HDR’s brand image across markets and clients.
Responsibilities include:
Overseeing market strategy and vision
Serving as client manager for key clients
Leading project pursuits and client relationships
Supporting business development efforts and industry engagement
Identifying strategic investments and partnerships
Representing HDR in industry organizations globally
Staff Development
Managing P&L for the sector
Driving technical excellence and staffing plans
Supporting recruitment and key hires
Participating in performance reviews
Support to Operations
Monitoring performance indicators
Facilitating work sharing and resource allocation
Reviewing contracts and supporting QA/QC
Promoting lessons learned and technical support
Qualifications Preferred:
20+ years in highway or bridge design, PE license, leadership in industry associations.
Required:
Bachelor’s in Engineering, 12+ years industry experience with leadership, strong communication, client management, business acumen, and active participation in HDR’s culture.
