Req#: 23-002600-0003 GRADE: ASTD10 LOCATION OF POSITION: Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center Transportation Unit, 300 North Gay Street, Baltimore, MD 21202 Main Purpose of Job: The DJS Youth Transportation Officer Trainee is the entry-level position responsible for transporting and escorting youth who have been detained or placed in a facility operated by the Department of Juvenile Services. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. POSITION DUTIES
Ensure the safety and security of youth being transported in accordance with current policy and procedure by providing supervision, care, and crisis intervention during transportation, escort, and temporary detention in juvenile courts. Maintain assigned vehicles by scheduling preventive maintenance, ensuring vehicle cleanliness, and following designated start-up and operating procedures. Ensure that passenger vans are equipped with an adequate number of working restraining devices and maintain vehicle maintenance logs and prepare incident reports. Escort, supervise, observe, and control youth in courtrooms and court detention areas in a secure manner and provide a security presence in the courtroom. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation. Experience: None. Note: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s): One year of experience transporting youth in a secure residential juvenile facility and full Maryland Correctional Training Commission certification. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS support staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position. Must be a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien and at least 21 years of age. A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing, an oral interview, and physical and psychological examinations are required. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day. Employees are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09.03 – Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. SELECTION PROCESS
