Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic), the Dean serves as the administrative leader of the Faculty of Law and will provide vision, inspiration, and strategic direction in advancing its mission of excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. The Dean oversees the Faculty’s academic programs, research, budgeting, governance, and external engagement, while fostering a collegial and intellectually vibrant environment for students, faculty, and staff. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to balance academic distinction with effective leadership, champion the Faculty’s bilingual and transsystemic identity, and strengthen its national and international standing through scholarly achievement, renowned legal education, and sustained engagement with the legal profession. As the Faculty’s principal ambassador and fundraiser, the Dean represents McGill Law to alumni, the legal profession, and external partners, ensuring that its research, teaching, and community engagement flourish
within the broader mission of McGill University.The ideal candidate will be a respected and accomplished academic leader and bridge builder, with a distinguished record of research, scholarship, teaching, and service at a research-intensive institution. Appointable at the rank of full professor, the successful candidate will exemplify the values of academic excellence and uphold the central mission of scholarship and education. They will demonstrate visionary yet grounded leadership, sound judgment, and a proven ability to enhance the impact of scholarship, while managing people, resources, and change effectively.
