Job Summary The per diem registered professional nurse possesses knowledge of theory and practice in order to diagnose and treat the human responses to actual or potential physical and emotional health problems. The seven domains of professional nursing practice are rendered in accordance with the nursing process which includes the assessment of patients, identification of problems and strengths, the planning and enactment of interventions and the evaluation and documentation of methods and outcomes of the nursing care provided. This process includes the involvement of the patient’s significant others and is in collaboration with physicians and other disciplines. The nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients on her or his assigned unit.
Responsibilities Creates a climate for healing by planning and providing for the provision of information and comfort measures to patients and families.
Assists patients and families to understand alternatives and facilitates communication of information to all members of the health care team.
Provides teaching and coaching functions, serving as a teacher‑coach by providing information and/or interpretation of the patient’s condition and rationale for procedures.
Identifies patient readiness to learn and follows predetermined instructional plans, documenting outcomes.
Teaches patients and families following standardized instructional plans and documents outcomes.
Plans for and documents discharge needs.
Performs effective management of rapidly changing situations by identifying situations that require immediate intervention and seeking assistance from the appropriate resource promptly.
Implements prescribed or delegated emergency measures safely, rapidly and accurately.
Accurately detects and documents significant changes in a patient’s physiological, psychological, cultural, and spiritual condition utilizing the nursing process to achieve expected outcomes with regard to the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on the assigned unit (infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).
Demonstrates the ability to identify and document the patient’s initial condition and the need for nursing care based on detailed assessment data reflective of each patient’s status, and to anticipate, interpret, and diagnose changes in a patient’s condition, planning the appropriate interventions to achieve expected outcomes and documenting accordingly.
Collaborates effectively with physical interventions; administers medications accurately and safely; documents according to the nursing process and RWJUH Standards of Care.
Ensures the delivery of safe and quality patient care by facilitating appropriate responses from other health team members participating in quality monitoring activities, obtaining new physician prescriptions to more appropriately reflect patient care regimens, collaborating with resources regarding problems with response from other health team members, attending unit‑based performance improvement analysis meetings, identifying important aspects of care, and contributing to the maintenance and/or improvement of care.
Organizes shift assignments, contributes to a therapeutic work environment, follows established policies and procedures, supports staffing patterns for a nursing service by consistently following scheduling policies and procedures, and maintains unit standards of care to patients and families.
Demonstrates a spirit of cooperation and flexibility with team members on nursing service units, independently maintains annual mandatory training requirements, attends in‑service programs as required or recommended, adheres to dress code, respects safety, security, life safety, emergency preparedness and utility and equipment management policies, adheres to Standard Precautions, follows infection control policies, attends mandatory in‑services, helps maintain a safe and clean patient work environment, follows incident reporting procedures, ensures compliance with corporate standards and accreditation surveys, and acts in an ethical and legal manner, ensuring all actions are in the best interest of both patients and the hospital.
Qualifications Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of New Jersey or a graduate of an accredited school with eligibility for licensure.
Experience:
The institution employs graduate nurses in all clinical areas except specified exceptions. Experience requirements vary by area; NICU requires knowledge of neonatal care, demonstrating prior experience with infants and other age groups as described. Prior experience with children and adolescents or training during orientation may be required for certain areas. Detailed expectations are listed under job‑specific requirements.
