Ubuntu Core Software Engineer
to redefine Linux experience in embedded environments with a secure, updatable OS in the IoT market. This role is ideal for a software engineer passionate about open source, Linux, security, and developer experience, requiring high technical skill with low-level OS, kernel, and device firmware. Our mission is to enable building robust solutions in fields like IoT, automotive, and aviation using a secure embedded Linux OS. We focus on device recovery mechanisms to simplify field operations for heterogeneous device fleets. As part of the Ubuntu Core team, you'll design and implement software on various CPU architectures such as ARM, RISC-V, and x86, working on boot mechanisms, bootloaders, storage, device trees, kernel, and services. This role is remote within the EMEA region. Role Responsibilities Write high-quality code with unit tests for new features. Debug Linux system issues and produce fixes. Collaborate proactively with a distributed team. Review code from other engineers. Discuss ideas and find solutions collaboratively. Integrate diverse bootloaders and maintain gadget snaps. Work remotely with global travel 2-4 times annually for events.
Candidate Requirements Passion for technology and working with talented people. Curious, flexible, articulate, and responsible. Soft skills: passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, self-motivated. Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar. Experience with C or Golang, Shell scripting. Solid understanding of Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu. Experience with Linux-capable devices like Raspberry Pi. Interest or experience in low-level systems and security facilities such as bootloaders, systemd, Linux security (TPM, FDE, LUKS, HSM). Knowledge of Yocto is a plus.
