Veterinary Surgical & Clinical Support Technician

We are seeking a

Veterinary Surgical & Clinical Support Technician

who will serve a wide role focusing on providing anesthesia and clinical support for pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, nonhuman primates, sheep, and ferrets. The Veterinary Surgical & Clinical Support Technician will provide technical support to recovering post-operative animals, support research protocols, and assist veterinarians during clinical surgeries and case management.

Responsibilities include: Administer medications via multiple routes including oral and parenteral. Perform routine sedation, anesthetic monitoring, diagnostic work-up, sample collection, and post-operative care. Perform sedation and minor procedures such as euthanasia, examinations, and diagnostic sample collection. Maintain the health of large animals, including hoof and nail trimming, TB testing, and routine weights. Support faculty and resident veterinarians during clinical and surgical procedures, including anesthesia and monitoring. Provide post-operative monitoring and care. Maintain a clean and stocked Recovery facility. Ensure compliance with research protocols and regulations for large animal research. Perform pre-release exams on non-human primates, including radiographs, weight, TB testing, and blood collection. Other duties as assigned. Veterinary Surgical Support duties include: Induce anesthesia for procedures. Prepare animals for procedures with pre-anesthetic medications, IV placement, intubation, clipping, scrubbing, and drug administration. Perform endotracheal intubation, including in difficult species. Assist during surgeries as a nurse and surgical assistant. Manage anesthetic emergencies, including notification and CPR. Prepare and maintain operating rooms and equipment. Operate specialized equipment such as ventilators, radiography, and syringe pumps. Assist with research protocols involving anesthesia in large animals. Teaching responsibilities include: Train investigators, veterinary residents, and staff in technical procedures. Instruct on routine clinical care and anesthesia monitoring. Administrative responsibilities include: Maintain animal records. Complete monitoring and treatment documentation. Stock supplies and drugs, and maintain controlled substance logs. Prepare service charges and participate in staff meetings. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Understanding of laboratory animal care regulations. Skills in catheterization, intubation, drug calculation, and anesthetic monitoring. Ability to restrain animals safely. Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain records. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work under safety conditions and lift up to 50 lbs. Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology or related field. Relevant experience or additional education as per JHU equivalency. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or related field. Registered Veterinary Technician license preferred. Registered Laboratory Animal Technician preferred.
