Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer Join the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University as a Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer. This role involves researching and developing algorithmic solutions to complex problems using large multivariate data sets. The position is located in State College, PA or Reston, VA and requires a U.S. citizen.

Responsibilities

Design and implement machine learning systems, models, and schemes.

Research and apply state‑of‑the‑art machine learning prototypes to sponsor‑specific domains.

Search and select appropriate data sets, perform data collection and data modeling.

Visualize data for deeper insights.

Generate and present technical research reports and briefings.

Perform statistical analysis to support pattern of life and anomaly detection.

Perform data fusion and correlation.

Build high‑quality software prototypes integrated with research and pre‑production environments.

Collaborate with ARL staff and sponsors.

Additional responsibilities for higher levels

Supervise the work of lower‑level staff and undergraduate students.

Lead specific tasks within the project scope.

Required skills / knowledge

Data science and algorithm development.

Proficiency in Python for machine learning.

Experience researching, developing, and implementing machine learning models.

Preferred skills / knowledge

Active TS/SCI security clearance.

Master’s degree.

Training and optimizing ML algorithms on GPU architectures (NVIDIA).

Experience with geo‑spatial data.

Strong background in statistics, multivariable calculus, and linear algebra.

Exploratory data analysis and visualization.

Knowledge of Pandas, PyTorch/TensorFlow, NumPy, Matplotlib, PostgreSQL, and FastAPI.

Software development tools including Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and SSH.

Location State College, PA or Reston, VA (classified environment).

Minimum Education & Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science; 2+ years of relevant experience (Research & Development Engineer – Intermediate Professional). No prior relevant work experience required for the Professional level.
