Job Overview A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, recommending alternative courses of action, and identifying methods of compliance with tax regulations. The role includes marketing, networking, and business development within the manager’s area of experience, recognizing changes in tax policy and applying new policies to tax compliance. The manager works with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients.

Job Duties

Research

Identify complex situations requiring research, outline the issue(s), and determine the appropriate source of research.

Analyze researched facts and sources before composing a detailed report of findings.

Develop relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel.

Tax Compliance

Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns to identify significant state tax issues.

Compose responses to notices from state taxing authorities.

Provide assistance with exam support.

Tax Consulting

Draft tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.

Apply relevant state tax consulting sub‑specialties and confer with other STS professionals when appropriate.

Determine the tax planning process.

Ensure engagement letters are adopted before work commences and manage engagements.

Assist in developing consultative selling strategies.

Manage client expectations.

Tax Controversy

Represent clients before any tax authority on contested issues.

Tax Related Software

Utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax‑related software in completing tasks.

Tax Specialization

Provide technical client service to multi‑state companies with state and local tax issues.

Conduct settlement negotiations, voluntary disclosure agreements, and state tax audit representation.

Draft technical memoranda regarding state and local tax issues.

Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109

Prepare tax accrual workpapers.

ASC740‑10

Understand and apply industry standards, firm policies, and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements relating to FAS 109, FIN48, and FAS5.

Strategy Development

Review studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of action for benefit of clients.

Develop new or improved ideas to advance client, firm, or personnel interests.

Assist with researching potential tax strategies.

Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.

Other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise day‑to‑day workload of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates; review work product.

Ensure training on relevant tax software.

Evaluate performance and assist in developing professional goals.

Deliver performance feedback and complete evaluations.

Act as Career Advisor to applicable staff.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (required).

Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. (preferred).

Experience

Eight or more years of state and local/multistate experience (required).

Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project basis (required).

Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions (preferred).

Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships (preferred).

License / Certifications

CPA or other relevant certification (preferred).

Software

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word (preferred).

Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools (preferred).

Compensation National Range: $99,750 – $262,500

Maryland Range: $99,750 – $262,500

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 – $262,500

Washington DC Range: $99,750 – $262,500
