General Summary of Position Functions as a clinical expert and healthcare provider educator, collaborator, consultant, leader, and researcher for a specific patient population or specialty topic. Uses a framework for professional evidence‑based nursing practice within three spheres of influence: patient/family nursing and system/organization. Acts as a consultant to address complex patient care issues, providing guidance in prevention and management of patient care practice. Coordinates, coaches, educates, and leads nursing staff in evidence‑based clinical practice quality improvement and patient safety. Conducts, facilitates, or applies research to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Builds trusting collaborative relationships with all members of the healthcare environment; facilitates departmental nursing and other meetings as appropriate; works collaboratively and effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
Engages in external and internal formal and informal teaching to nursing and other health disciplines; functions within a faculty role as applicable; acts as a preceptor for affiliation students; collaborates in planning educational activities in accordance with American Nurses Credentialing Center standards.
Provides clinical expertise and professional advice; develops, maintains, and applies nursing standards, order sets, patient care protocols, and policies in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Provides specialized nursing leadership for a defined patient population; demonstrates professional and clinical leadership skills.
Supports the patient‑care delivery model by assessing, planning, evaluating, and modifying nursing care and treatment based on data obtained through observation, interviewing, and analysis of patient records.
Participates in the assessment, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of clinical services for a designated patient population; analyzes patient data to evaluate appropriateness in care.
Demonstrates a holistic approach to care regarding patient/family clinical education and psychosocial needs.
Utilizes approaches and strategies to optimize patient care outcomes based on interdisciplinary plans and principles of integrative, contemporary primary nursing; supports National Patient Safety Goals and regulatory requirements.
Acts as a resource to nursing and medical staff and other disciplines in providing the patient’s plan of care and discharge planning.
Provides expertise and support for health‑care surveys and regulatory and compliance reviews from local, regional, and national entities; collaborates with facility leadership on post‑survey action planning and execution.
Participates in departmental and hospital interdisciplinary teams and committees to determine policy standards, clinical procedures, and nursing scope of practice.
Participates in risk management related to nursing practice; incorporates evidence into all clinical activities; actively participates in evidence‑based practice and performance improvement activities; disseminates research findings through presentations and publications; leads and mentors nursing research activities at the unit/departmental level.
Supports the development and implementation of an organization‑wide patient safety program, including participation in nursing peer review and compliance with national patient safety goals.
Guides and facilitates the development and modification of performance improvement planning and activities; documents existing processes and leads teams to improve outcomes for designated patient populations; participates in the development, coordination, and dissemination of measurable objectives and outcomes.
Leads and manages multidisciplinary projects aimed at improving hospital performance in areas such as infection prevention, safety compliance, regulatory and nursing practice; serves as a facilitator and collaborator at the highest level.
Supports the Department of Nursing mission and vision by promoting continuous learning, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance; identifies barriers and uses effective change‑management strategies; promotes pathway‑to‑excellence standards through daily practice.
Collaborates with nursing education and management to assess staff competencies and learning needs; develops educational materials to promote knowledge of practice changes and important project milestones; analyzes data to identify practice and patient care issues.
Assists in establishing and maintaining a therapeutic and safe environment that supports evidence‑based practice to achieve quality patient outcomes.
Maintains knowledge of current trends in clinical specialty through professional activities, research, literature review, seminars, conferences, and continuing scholarly growth.
Facilitates state‑of‑the‑art nursing care by implementing and evaluating new techniques and equipment for safety, cost‑effectiveness, and benefit; provides cost/benefit analysis for clinical program equipment or practice changes.
Minimal Qualifications Education
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
Master’s degree in Nursing required
For the Performance Improvement Clinical Specialist the Master's degree in Nursing plus Lean training are required within one year of hire.
Doctoral degree in Nursing Education or Healthcare Administration preferred
Experience
5‑7 years of progressively more responsible job‑related experience in Nursing required
Experience in a nursing advanced practice role preferred
Licenses and Certifications
RN – Registered Nurse – State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 year required
CPR (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required
Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit
Health Services/ACLS required
Hiring range: USD $89,065.00 – USD $162,801.00 per year.
