Responsibilities

The Dentist provides and supervises the complete dental care of facility detainees/inmates.

Evaluates and seeks improvement in the facility dental health program, dental services provided, patient care required/administered, dental operative conditions and equipment in use.

Functions as a consultant to the facility staff physician.

Initiates and maintains compliance with company policies for accreditation.

Completes an initial dental screening on all new commitments within seven (7) days.

Evaluates patients needing dental care and makes recommendations deemed clinically appropriate.

Takes impressions for dental plates and sends prostheses to outside dental labs.

Formulates and creates treatment plans on an individual basis after a thorough exam.

Performs routine cleaning, drilling, filling, and extraction of teeth in accordance with National Commission for Correctional Health Care Standards for dental care.

Educates patients on maintaining proper oral health and prevention.

Teaches patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care.

Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented dental conditions and regularly reviews ongoing cases requiring ongoing medical/pharmaceutical attention.

Produces clear and concise health records, reports and correspondence, including the use of Electronic Health Records system.

Monitors need for dental supplies and equipment.

Provides in‑service training for health staff members on appropriate issues, such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques.

Supervises the work of professional, technical and administrative staff and provides input into performance evaluation.

Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with all federal and state health information privacy laws.

Collaborates and communicates effectively with the Hospital medical team, psychiatric, mental health professionals, nurses, health technicians and administrative assistants.

Maintains professional appearance and demeanor.

Performs other various duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Degree in dentistry from an accredited dental school; licensed to practice as a registered dentist in the state in which the facility is located.

Professional license must remain on file at all times at the facility where services are rendered.

Must be able to deal effectively with difficult detainees/inmates and staff at times.

Demonstrate the ability to adjust medical techniques to accommodate the needs of the specialized population of the correctional setting. This includes communication between medical staff and detention staff about the care of detainees while understanding and adjusting for the unique security issues of the facility.
