The salary range for this position is $34.84–$54.01 per hour. Placement within the range is based on experience and internal equity. For unionized positions, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

Description
The ASL Interpreter reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine (NM), adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities
- Conduct medical and general interpreting for patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team in accordance with the National Standards of Practice of NCIHC.
- Assess and monitor patients’ understanding of information conveyed, and serve as a cultural mediator.
- Record and monitor interpretation activities according to department standards.
- Make decisions regarding prioritization of multiple requests received at one time.
- Medical Interpreting:
- Provide services during consultations, diagnostic testing, procedures, operations, consent process, and educational forums; ensure communication of patient’s and family’s needs.
- Screen multiple requests and prioritize based on urgency.
- Assist the healthcare team in problem solving and complaint resolution for limited English‑proficient populations.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain practice standards.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Initiate and develop positive relationships with patients, visitors, providers, interpreters, and staff, exhibiting respect, flexibility, and cooperation.
- Serve as a cultural mediator to enhance communication between American culture staff and native culture patients/families.
- Support continuous assessment and improvement of the interpretation services program.
- Assist with other departmental functions as assigned.
- Actively participate in staff meetings and mandatory in‑services.
- Documentation:
- Maintain documentation of all encounters, including location, duration, and purpose; record all refusals of services.
- Maintain accurate records of productivity, work volumes, and interpretation requests.
- Additional Functions:
- Proven proficiency in Excel and Word.
- Adaptable to software necessary for data tracking and trending.
Qualifications
Required
- Certification from the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission with at least an Advanced or Master license.
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf certification completion, demonstrating formal training and qualifications for medical interpreting.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years’ experience providing medical interpreting in an acute care setting.
- High level of fluency in English.
- Ability to interpret accurately and impartially, using medical terminology as appropriate.
- Maintain a professional demeanor in all situations.
- Knowledgeable about cultural competency and healthcare disparities; adaptable and sensitive in cross‑cultural situations.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience with Tactile Sign Language (hand‑over‑hand), tactile fingerspelling, or pro‑tactile ASL interpreting; verified 40 hours of training via shadow/teach‑back with an experienced interpreter.
