Position Overview
Under the direct supervision of the Department Manager and general supervision of the Supervisor of Cardiac Sonography, this position performs complex pediatric echocardiograms on both inpatient and outpatient populations. The role requires proficiency in all clinical modalities offered in the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory, including data interpretation and generation of preliminary reports according to departmental procedures and standards. The individual will maintain work area and equipment, follow established protocols, assist in maintaining lab accreditation, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives while promoting a positive and safe environment for patients, families, and coworkers.
Key Responsibilities
Perform ultrasound tests on inpatients, outpatients, and research patients, including 2D/3D imaging, M-mode, Doppler (color and spectral), and stress echo tests. Explain the purpose and procedure of each test to patients in a professional and friendly manner. Assist with quality assurance and quality improvement programs, including periodic reviews of echocardiograms for quality and proficiency. Ensure adherence to patient safety goals and assist with laboratory accreditation documentation as needed. Assist in the development and implementation of procedures related to processing echocardiograms, such as data entry and editing. Provide echo guidance for sonographers at affiliated clinics and hospitals via telemedicine for approved sites. Conduct preliminary reports with appropriate data and measurements for analysis. Review recordings on screen for clarity, positioning, and quality. Communicate findings with attending physicians post-procedure and provide additional comments or suggestions for the preliminary report. Contribute to a team approach, fostering a positive and service-oriented image for the department. Respond to requests in a timely and friendly manner, maintaining professionalism at all times. Assist in developing orientation materials and provide orientation to new fellows, sonographer students, and staff regarding the operations of the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory. Work with the Department Manager and Lead Principal Pediatric Echocardiographer to coordinate and optimize the use of the Echocardiography digital image management system (PACS). Assist in clinical research projects, ensuring adherence to protocol and timely data transfer.
Skills And Certifications
Current registration as a cardiac sonographer (RDCS) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (required). Four to five years of work experience in a hospital-based echo lab environment (required). Registration in fetal echocardiography preferred (Must obtain within one year of hire if not already registered). Demonstrated ability to work independently in an acute-care hospital-based echo laboratory. Strong knowledge of pediatric echocardiography protocols and procedures. Ability to conduct training and orientation for new staff and students in the lab. Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
Working Environment
Ability to handle complex pediatric cases and adjust procedures accordingly. Work collaboratively with physicians, researchers, and other healthcare providers to ensure high-quality patient care.
